Just visited my 64th different country – Argentina. It was a quick 1 hour 30 minute flight from Santiago, Chile! Coming from the landscape of Santiago which reminded me of Arizona in the United States, I would compare the landscape of Buenos Aires, especially outside the city center as reminding me of the state of Maryland. Lots of greener and wide open fields were noticeable upon landing.
Buenos Aires is often referred to as the most European city in South America, and the architecture reflected this. Throughout the last two centuries, Argentinians have hired many architects from France, Italy and England to replicate much of the architecture from Europe into the city.
The National Congress building reflects this architecture, as well as the community north of the city center, Recoleta, which is home of the final resting place of one of Argentina’s most famous political and social figures of the 20th Century, Eva Perron. Her life was the subject of the 1996 film, Evita. Interestingly, Madonna starred as the title character.
It is quite easy to walk around the city center of Buenos Aires. One of the widest streets in the world is home to a giant Obelisk in the center that completely reminded me of the Washington Monument. If it starts to rain, uber is extremely inexpensive in the city. I was shocked when I found that it was less than $2 American dollars to travel in Uber from one of the end of the city to the other!
No trip to Argentina is complete without trying some of the local foods! Argentina is known for its delicious meats, especially its Asado which is a type of Argentine bbq. But I also got to experience some of the desserts including Dulce de Leche and Alfajores.
Argentina is the second largest country in South America by population and the international influence is demonstrated throughout the country. Although, I only had time to visit Buenos Aires, there are many other parts of the country which are worth exploring, so I am sure I will be returning in the future!
