I didn’t allow a recent blizzard to stop enjoying the beautiful Baltic Country of Estonia. The capital city of Estonia is Tallin which is home to an incredible medieval old city.

The old town is extremely walkable with only a few short inclines. Even on a snowy day, it was quite easy to get around. The city is surrounded by in-tact walls with over 40 different towers, some of the towers even allow you to visit inside the tower.

From the old town, there are some incredible vantage points which allow you to see the Gulf of Finland as well as the modern portions of the city of Tallin. Most people arrive in Tallin either at the cruise port or via the airport a few miles outside the city center. I happened to arrive via one of the many daily cruises from Helsinki, Finland.

While there are many ways to transport from the cruise terminal to the Old Town, including via taxi or ridesharing service, I found it was a short easy walk from the terminal to the old city, that only took no more than 25 minutes.

Once you get to the walls of the Old Town, there are many local restaurants and shops that line the streets. One of the best ways to orient is to consider the many churches that are found within the Old Town. Highlighting the different communities throughout the years that have settled in the Old Town, there is an incredible Russian Orthodox Cathedral, a Catholic Church and a Lutheran Church among others.

Another must see in the Old Town is the Town Hall and the Town Square. When I was there, there were many holiday sites set up in the Town Square, with the snow falling it was quite picturesque.

For those interested in a bit of more modern history, the KGB museum, where there were former prison cells hosted by the KGB during the rule of the Soviet Union is a can’t miss stop. Estonia is a country that has enjoyed its current state of independence since 1991. The people are incredibly friendly and with a population of approximately 1.35 million, it continues to be a growing and thriving country. I highly recommend visiting when you get a chance.
